Show TABLET DESIGN FOR CATHEDRAL Beautiful Work of Bronze to Replace Carving Now Being Removed. (Salt Lake Herald.), People who have passed up and down Brighum street during the last mouth or so have seen an artisan carefully chipping away a series of carved statues stat-ues or images on the front of the new St. Marys' cathedral. The work of removal re-moval has been finished, and now the problem confronts Bishop Laurence Scanlan of the diocese of Salt Lake how much he may expend in replacing the carving which has just been removed. re-moved. The reason for the removal of the engraven images was that the" stor.e surface was too soft, and it was deemed fit and proper, to have a work of art in its place. Various designs have been submitcd to Bishop Scanlan. One of these is reproduced from the sculptor's model herewith. Tn a. general gen-eral way indeed, in practically a way following closely the idea presented this model will be followed. Definite decision has not yet been reached. In order that the tablet, so called for the sake of brevity, may compass both art and workmanship, a work in bronze has- been determined upon. Plans suggested sug-gested range from $1,000 to $3,000 as they involve expenditure. Inasmuch as nothing tawdry or "cheap will be seriously considered, it has been suggested sug-gested that the ornamentation could be nicely finished for $2,500 to $3,000. Furthermore, it has been suggested that the erection of tlvs magnificent piece would be a creditable memorial on the part of some person of means. The space to be filled by the statuary is approximately ten feet high by twenty to twenty-five feet wide. It is possible that the carving will be done In Europe, where many specialists engage en-gage in this class of work. The Allegory. The allegorical story that Is told in this series of statues is the account of the first and foremost tragedy the world ever knew not first in point of time, but first in importance. Two thousand years, old is this tale of the crucifixion" of the Savior; two thousand years the Christian people have read it and heeded Its lesson. , The story told in the representation is that of "the death of Jesus Christ. There are, aside from the figure on the cross. St. John, the youngest and favorite fa-vorite disciple of Jesus: the Blessed Virgin and Mary Magdalene, who valla at the .base of the crucifix, and after whom the name of the new cathedral in Salt Lake is taken. It should be noted thnt the figures are those which are n part of all Christian faiths and denominations, and not of Catholics alone. Bishop Scanlan has every reason to believe that the tablet will be in place by the time the dedicatory ceremonies cere-monies are to be held. |
