Special Correspondence I There is a fine service of steamers plying be- t tween Dublin and Holyhead, whether you embark; j ! at the North Wall or at the snug and now beauti- - ful harbor of Kingstown. Punctual to the minute the express glides away through the , barren land of Wales over the famous Menai strait and on and on pass Bangor. Conway and those other pretty towns nestling so quietly on the arm of the sea, until you reach the old fashioned brick city of Chester, remarkable for hs Cathedral, curiously cu-riously formed streets and cheese. You have left the majestic mountains and pic- f turesque valleys of Wales behind you and from Chester to London you see on each side of the track evidences of the industry and wealth of England, in the shape of well kept farmsteads, pottery fields, coal fields and mills of all kinds too numerous to mention. It is not my intention to describe for you any of the cities on the way. Chester. Stafford, Crewe. Rugby and the rest. Such a proceeding ! would take me too long atid besides it is my pur- j . pose to take my reader to London and there he will : see what is to be seen in Knglish life. You have Buckingham street and Villiers street called after the celebrated Bucking- , ham and Villiers of the olden day. men who figured I so prominently in the reign of the fi4c King j Charles. Someone has rightly said. "Stand for a day at Charing Cross and you can 'study the world. The : Hebrew and the Greek, the fair hair Scandinavian and the swarthy Italian, children of the desert.; mountain wood and valley, all are there, all swell up that seven million and over of a population ; which the modern Babylon contains. What different dif-ferent aims and ambitions swell those breasts, ! what hopes and disappointments, what motives of ; avarice and revenge beat within those hearts. I There is gaiety hand in hand with sorrow, hunger ! and misery in the company of luxury and wealth. : You have all the extremes there in the heart of t that mighty city. A little below Charing Cros ; the strand opens out and there right before you i-Trafalgar i-Trafalgar Square with the tall and majestic column of Nelson keeping guard as of yore over England--capital. At the back of the square is the National Gallery, a plain building without any of those ornaments or-naments which would suggest to the beholder th. glorious genius displayed on the canvas that decorate deco-rate the walls inside. 1 will take my reader baek again to the National Gallery.
