Owens, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Owens, took place from St. Mary's Pro-Cathedral last Friday morning. The cathedral was crowded with friends and schoolmates of the young man, whose sudden death had come to them as a severe blow. The hearse was escorted from the residence by the All Hallows college band and the All Hallows cadet corps, former schoolmates school-mates of Mr. Owens. As the casket was lowered from the hearse and taken into in-to the cathedral, to the strains of "Sta-bat "Sta-bat Mater," the boys of the cadet corps came to "present arms." In the church solemn requiem mass was celebrated.' Rev. Father W. K. Ryan was the celebrant. He also preached the funeral sermon, which was an eulogy on the excellent life and character of the young man, for the repose of whose soul he was then offering offer-ing up the mass. The requiem music by the choir and the quartet was beautiful beau-tiful and impressive. Solos were sung by Mrs. Corinne Hammer and J. J. Burke. One hundred members of the Knights of Columbus, of which order Mr. Owens had been a member, occupied occu-pied pews in the cathedral. The floral offerings were exquisite and came from many friends. After coming to America he attended St. Dominies' school in Denver until 1S95 and next entered the Sacred Heart college col-lege of Denver, where he won a scholarship schol-arship in 1S98. Four years ago the family moved to Salt Lake, and in June, 1905, James graduated from All Hallows' college. Never was a more beautiful funeral sermon preached than that of Rev. Father Ryan's over the body of James Owens. Father Ryan could talk without any fear for when James Owens went from earth forever the soul of an earnest true, practical, truly Christian young man went to eternal rest. He had friends in every walk of life non-Catholic and Catholic all regretting the untimely end of a bright and promising life. When his loss is so deeply felt among his friends, how great and desolate is the sorrow in the hearts of the family! The dear big brother, the "old man" of the family fam-ily has been taken away, the hearts of the loving sisters and devoted brothers broth-ers are well nigh broken with grief. To the parents, who are in truth ideal Catholic parents, the bereavement is terrible, but with the sincere faith and earnest piety instilled into their hearts in Catholic Ireland they bow with resignation res-ignation to God's will, to God, Who in His Infinite Mercy knows best, when He takes truly good souls from earth to His own tender keeping. There are others besides the immediate relatives who deeply mourn the loss of an earnest, earn-est, noble soul, an honest Chrintian young man who was a credit to his parents and his religion. May the stul of James Owens rest In peace! |
