Show Judging from the railroad wrecks the past few days, ihe year 1907 bids fair to equal in disasters the calamitous days of lf01. when peculiarly horrible horri-ble railroad and steamship aeeidents added to the most terrific, earthquakes, hurricanes and volcanic: eruptions Cod has visited upon his people in years. Vesuvius, the terror of centuries, semi-dormant for years, loosed her internal workings upon 40.000 helpless people and rendered them homeless. Soon after, San Francisco, the proud city of the Golden Gate, was shaken by earthquake and virtually wiped out by ire. In August. Valparaiso, Chile, was laid low by earthquake and fire. Then the appalling ap-palling typhooa at Hongkong claimed thousands of lives and ipillions of dollars of property. And early in October incalculable Joss -was visited upon the coast cities of the Gulf by a tropical hurricane which swept from the "West Indies up the Atlantic and over the Gulf of Mexico. These visitations, together to-gether with wrecks, both railroad and naval, and fires, show the year 190(5 to be without parallel in history. They also show man's inability hi cope with the elements, his feebleness in the earth, the . inscrutability of the divine plan. |
