Show ' Excommunication. (Catholic Columbian.) The pope has1 recentlyxcommunicat-ed recentlyxcommunicat-ed certain men who are guilty of heresy her-esy of modernism. Excommunication is of two kinds the minor and the major. The minor excommunication' deprives a Catholic of the right to participation participa-tion in the sacraments, and Indirectly, Indirect-ly, as' a consequence, of the right of receiving a benefice. The major excommunication deprives of all ecclesiastical communion. It excludes ex-cludes from participation in the sacraments, sac-raments, sacrifices, sacred offices, benefices, ben-efices, dignities, ecclesiastical jurisdiction jurisdic-tion and Christian burial. The one thus excommunicated is cast out of the church and becomes to it as the heathen and the publican. Those who are so excommunicated are of two classes the tolerated, whom the faithful are not bound to avoid, and the non-tolerated, with whom no true Catholic may have any dealings. Excommunication is inflicted not to injure a person, but to make him repentto re-pentto shock him into consciousness of the enormity of his offense and to hold out the greatest possible inducement induce-ment to him to give up his evil ways and return to the possession of graty? and peace. |
