Show King Alfonso's Courage. Recent events in Spain have served to show very conclusively the inherent inher-ent courage of King Alfonso. Those who have known him best declare j that he does not know what fear is, j and certainly his actions some times border on the reckless. There is authority for stating that he was very anxious to take the buil by the horns and go to Barcelona in person in the hope that his presence might do something to quell the riots. He was, however, overruled by his ministers, but he hept very closely In touch with all that was taking place, and is now using his influence to mingle justice with mercy when the ring leaders of the recent riots come to be dealt with. Some years ago when the outloo? was very black in Barcelona and other parts of Spain. King Alfonso was discussing events with a group when some one asked him what he wouid do if ever he found it necessary neces-sary to follow Napoleon III and other European sovereigns into exile. "I should at once go to England or America and purchase a farm in some country district and try to forget that there was such a place as Spain or any land that was less peaceful than the one in which I found myself." he said. |
