Show CATHOLIC INCREASE IN AMERICA. The new Catholic directory, published by Wiltz-ius Wiltz-ius company, Milwaukee, shows an increase in the Catholic population of the United States. The exact ex-act number registered is 11,S87,317. There are one cardinal, fourteen archbishops, eighty-two bishops and 13,267 priests, including those of religious orders- There are 11,180 churches. The parochial schools have 986,033 children in regular attendance. with 750-802 children who are educated in different charitable institutions, making a total of 1,736,890 children who are receiving a good secular education and a sound moral training. . In this year's issue is also a brief summary of the church in the Philippine islands. The archdiocese archdio-cese of Manila, which was erected in 1581, and now under the spiritual jurisdiction of the first American Ameri-can archbishop, Most Rev. J. J. Harty, has a Catholic Cath-olic population of 1,800,000. The next in importance impor-tance is the diocese of Cebu, established in 1595. Rt. Rev. T. A. Hendricks is the first American bishop. bish-op. The Catholic population of the diocese is 1-700,-000. Three other dioceses, namely, Yigan, Cama-rines Cama-rines and Jaro, with a Catholic population of 3,000,-000, 3,000,-000, and governed by three American bishops, are also given. The archdiocese of Manila has a Catholic Cath-olic population of 1,800,000. That is more than the archdiocese of Xew York and the diocese of Brooklyn combined. In the archdiocese of Xew York there are 754 priests, or one priest for every 1,590 Catholics. The archdiocese of Manila has 21G priests or one priest for 8,333 Catholics. This makes the supply available in Xew York six times greater than that of Manila. ' t |
