Show ANOTHER PAPAL ZOTJAVE. John T. W. De Jong of Salt Lake Divides Di-vides Honors With a Veteran. In last week's issue of The Intermountain Inter-mountain Catholic there appeared a story of Louis Duguay. now of Wyoming, Wyo-ming, who bore the distinction of being be-ing a Zouave in the service of his holiness, holi-ness, Pius IX. The article quoted Mr. Duguay as being the only Zouave in this western region. This, however, is misleading. John T. W. De Jong of Salt Lake served with the papal Zouaves Zou-aves of Rome for over two years. Mr. De Jong was horn in Amsterdam, Holland. At the age of 17 he volunteered volun-teered his services and went to Rome, paying the expenses of his trip out of his own private funds. At the expiration expira-tion of nearly three years' service, in 1S70, he resigned, only a few weeks before the Papal Zouaves were driven from Rome by Garibaldi. Mr. De Jong is pardonably proud of his record while in service, and the certificate of honorable discharge, bearing the papal seal, which he retains, re-tains, is of priceless value to the veteran vet-eran Zouave. v Mr. De Jong and his estimable wife are residents of this city and are members mem-bers of St. Mary's parish. Both are splendid examples of truly devout Catholics, and it gives pleasure to The Intermountain Catholic to award due merit to another veteran . of that memorable time when the holy father was despoiled of his temporal possessions. |
