Show j Discovered a ''State" Church. A1 T LAST the Deseret New - has found something which it bousL-fully bousL-fully reproduces to substantiate its claim that New Mexico was denied admission as a slate because its people were completely dominated by clerical influences. It is discovered in the second sec-ond volume of 'Encyclopedic Dictionary Diction-ary of American Reference," containing contain-ing this statement under the head of New Mexico: "The fear that a state church would be established by the Mexicans in the state has prevented its admission l": the L'nion." J Beyond establishing the date oi l certain cer-tain events and the names of persons figuring in them, the comment of these compilers of encyclopedic al' dictionaries dic-tionaries bear no more value toward establishing accuracy than do the com- tnoni tVic 11.oT-ef- "Veu-s r,r the pamphlets' of the Rev. Thomas F. Iliff. If the Deseret News is anxious to substantiate its assertion that congress con-gress rejected New Mexico's claim because be-cause of national hostility to Jesuits, why not produce it from the Congressional Congress-ional Record? That is certainly a more reliable source of information than is the cheap publication turned out every day for the book trade. 'file absurd mention of "state" church in the paragraph quoted from the dictionary dic-tionary discovers the compiler's ignorance ignor-ance of the subject treated. Think of a "state" church in any part of this republic! How would the Desr-ret News like to rest its case upon the pamphlets seyt out by the Rev. Thomas F. Iliff? |
