Show r; OLD FAITH IN SCOTLAND. From "Scottish Reminiscences," by Sir Archibald Geikie, we learn that the Catholic faith, which once prevailed pre-vailed universally over Scotland, still keeps a foothold on some of the islands, is-lands, particularly Rarra, Benbeeula, and South Uist, and in certain districts dis-tricts of the mainland. In Eigg about half of the population is still Catholic, Catho-lic, thb other half being divided between be-tween the Established and Free Churches. Sir Archibald says that in the West Highlands there seems to be little or no tantagonism between Catholics and Protestants. Of- the Scottish priests our author speaks highly, referring to them as men of superior education, broad sympathies, and polished manners.. Sir Archibald has sojourned in every part of North Britain, and for sixty years has mm- ; gled with all classes of its inhabit- . ants. He will be remembered as art J . eminent geologist. j |
