Tli is is the seventh of a series of agitational ag-itational editorials dealing with the J Miigulur absenc of Catholics from the I faculties of the state universities and non-sectarian colleges. Catholics were among the pion- Boers of Illinois. Chicago has had a I ttholic bishop since 1843. We have at hand a report espec- jally prepared for us showing that there I aie 460 members in the faculty of tiiis I university. Not one of them is a Cath-i Cath-i -ilic althfuigh there are perhaps 200 "atholies among the students. There is a tradition at Urbana that sometime ago and somehow there ; was a Catholic tutor in the State Uni versity of Illinois. How did he get in? j Is the board of regents non-settar- i i;in. Catholic Citizen. The Church's Vitality. For several hundred years certain adversaries ad-versaries of the faith have been saying say-ing that Catholicity has lost its vital i fnrrc Wh.it rin thov- thinli- n,i v Over in Canada she is backing: a Lord's day bill that will make Sunday a day of actual rest. I town in New Jersey the bishop's bill admittedly is driving the saloon Htting room out of existence. J Up in Ohio Bishop Horstman and j his clergy stand in conflict against in- I decent slot machine photographs and I lewd bar room pictures. I Out in Nebraska Bishop Scannell pnd J his priests are waging a resolute bat-j f tie against gambling. J Down in Louisiana the Federated i Catholic societies have declared aeainst immoral plays and books. Out in Helena. Montana, Bishop Cir- f loll is denouncing wine rooms in vig- i orous terms as he goes from church to J church. And so it goes all over the country. l f Quite evidently the church is not dead. ' In reality, she is very mu:n awake. ; " The Catholic Sun. Over the Years Away. "O dear farm, O lost farm. O fields that faced the sea! O garden old, where the children stroll'd, In the likeness of you and me. How the dreams call'd, and the lanes j call'd, Till our feet must 'needs obey, Over the beckoning roads, dear Oyer the long gray roads, dear. Over the roads away. "O sweetheart, O strongheart, O dearest of all to me! Our past is dead, our dreams are fled e stroll by a vaster sea: But the storms call and waves call And we dare not say them nay, Over the years we fare, love. Over the lands of care, love. Over the years away!" Frederic Lawrence Knowks. Self-Love. tw'-1 thC faU'tS in a ,llan' character there is none which lowers it more in the estimation of his fellowmen than that of self-love. Contemptible as It the undesirable habit of self-nraise a raise pnde and a. strong inclination toward jealousy.. In it the nobler ends are sacrificed for the meaner. I lead us to prefer our own claims and merits mer-its before all others. Through if we deny others everything and refuse ourselves our-selves nothing, it magnifies the good qualities of our friends as thev seem to act vell toward us. and it diminishes those qualities in the friends who point out our faults. It blinds us to the distinction dis-tinction between the flatterer, whom ebstor calls "the shadow of a m ince's body:" and the friend whom Emerson styles "the masterpiece of nature." The only way successfully to eomlvU this ignoble vice is to love God For if we love God with a true love. Wt. are led to the virtue so opposed to Uie vice of self-love heroic sacrifice It makes us feel that whatever God has given us. he gave it for mankind and not for ourselves. Its cultivation makes the wants of our friends our wants. It teaches to give out rather than take in. It is the noblest of virtues, for it is the imitation of Christ's life on earth. Calendar. The Jesuit General. Somebody rises to remark that the new general of the Jesuits is a l,;,d choice that he has the faith of the Middle Ages. We should sav that hi faith goes father back even than the Middle Ages. It goes back is does the I church of which he is a faithful son to Christ himself. Sacred Heart Review. |
