It may be authoritatively au-thoritatively stated that the much discussed dis-cussed Rospigliosi case is finally settled set-tled that it vvill. not be reopened. Cardinal Car-dinal Gibbons today had the following statements of the facts prepared for the Associated Press: "In 1SS7 the late- Archbishop Chap-pelle, Chap-pelle, at that time rector of St. Math-ew's Math-ew's church', Washington, D. C, applied ap-plied to the cardinal for a dispensation tn disparltate cultus for the marriage of Miss Reid and Colonel r'arkhurst. A dispensation in disparitate cultus is the form required for the marriap? of a Catholic to an unbaptied person, and was the dispensation asked for and granted in the case in question. It is so recorded in the chancery ' bj k at the cathedral. Colonel and Mrs. Park-hurst Park-hurst were divorced and subsequentiy she and Prince Rospiglios went through a form of marria?e. It was this fcjrm of marriare that thev attempted at-tempted to have calidated at Rome on the plea that the proper dispensation in disparitate cultus had not ' been granted in thefirst instance. The cardinal car-dinal was consulted by the propaganda and a special messenger, M?y. Mar-chitti. Mar-chitti. came to Baltimore and examined the chancery book and found that the dispensation in disparitate cui'.u3 had been duly -granted and recorded. Th3 case was finally - brought before the pone, who decided that the marriage with Colonel Parkhurst was valid and that therefore, the second 'marriage could not be recognised. His holiness also decided 'that no further appeal should be entertained.' Mrs. j'arkhurst is said to have, alleged, that not 'the. proper, but Another, dispensation had been asked. The whole 'case: rest on this point. .The -chaw; cry book of Bah timore have always' -been kept with the greatest care and exactness as to every detail." -. . - - - - |
