Show Scotch Catholic General Dead. The death is announced of General Sir Montagu Gerard. K. C. B., brigadier briga-dier general, commanding the Hyderabad Hyder-abad contingent of the British navy in India.- The general was appointed at the commencement of the Russo-Japanese Russo-Japanese war head of the British staff attached to the Russian army, and the hardships he had to endure in the long campaign told severely on his health, so that he was invalidated home. He succumbed to pneumonia at Irkutsk, near Sr. Petersburg. General Gerard joined the Roval artillery in 1SG4. The deceased, who was a brother of Father Gerard. S. J.. was the Laird of Rochswles, so that in his death the Catholic laity of Scotland loses one of its most distinguished members. He was born in 1843 and was the son ' of Colonel Archibald Gerard, of Roch- soles, of the Ninety-second Highlanders, Highland-ers, and-a grandson of Colonel Gerard, of Rochsoles. who acted as adjutant general to Lord Lake during the Mar-atha Mar-atha wars. Sir Montagu was a Slonv-hurst Slonv-hurst man. But a few months since his sister, the well known novelist, died. |
