Show j VIRGINIA CITY, NEV. While gathering snow with which to make Ice cream Monday afternoon, Mrs. Clayton Belknap narrowly escaped es-caped death by falling into the old Best & Belcher shaft, near the head of Taylor street. Mrs. Belknap approached an old shed over tho shaft, when the ground under her suddenly gave way and she was precipitated -into the shaft, which is several hundred feet deep. Fortunately she landed on an old platform after dropping about twenty feet. The platform was a rickety rick-ety affair, but Mrs. Belknap retained her presence of mind and remained perfectly quiet, fearing that a. move would cause the platform to give way, in which event she would have been dashed to death in the yawning chasm below. Miss Gussie Kaiser, who was with her when the acscident occurred, hurriedly informed the neighbors of what had happened, and a ladder and ropes were procured. The ladder was lowered Into the shaft and Dan Tier-ney Tier-ney descended and aided Mrs. Belknap to ascend to the surface. Virginia City Enterprise. |
