Show FORTY HOURS' DEVOTION. It Originated in Italy iu 1534 and in This Country 1S53. The forty hours' adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in memory of the forty hours during which the sacred body of Jesus was in the sepulchre, began be-gan at Milan about the year l."34. It soon spread to other cities of Italy and in 1551 was introduced into Rome. In K.y2 Clement VIII provided that the Blessed Sacrament should be exposed ex-posed for public adoration in continuous continu-ous succession on the altars of certain churches in Rome. He enriched the devotion de-votion with special indulgence. In 1H06 Paul V confirmed the decree of Clement VIII and established the 'dOotion in perpetuity.
