Show RELIGIOUS INTELLIGENCE. . Catholics of Brooklyn. N. Y.. have started a movement to erect buildings in the different parishes of the city for the physical and mental training of young men. One . building is to cost $50,000. Other Catholics should fol-low fol-low -the example.', of their, Brooklyn brethren by providing a Jia.ll where young men could meet for eocial benefit, bene-fit, and where they could improve rriind and body. A building for Catholic women would bring together many who are friendless and -strangers to the city. . ; Writing of the Trappiste, a compiu-nity compiu-nity of whom, exiled from France, are now in Rogersville, New Brunswick, the New Freeman, of St. John, says: "It is remarkable how these men live. For centuries their order has existed in the Church; they will not die out: governments cannot kill them. The manner of living among them would soon put an end to most of us. . At least so we think. They never eat meat in any shape. They don't take too much sleep, being on foot as early as 2 o'clock in the morning. Potatoes, turnips, carrots, cabbage,' bread, fruit, when they can get it, is the bill of fare, day in and day out. Fish, eggs; milk, butter and che'eee are the luxuries with them. They are healthy and livelong." President Roosevelt has recently made a cash contribution toward the movement to purchase Irish pictures for the proposed Gallery of Modern Art to be established in Dublin. The conversion . on his deathbed of Leonard Moody has caused quite a stir in church circlet? in Brooklyn N. Y. Mr. Moody had long been treasurer of the Brooklyn tabernacle and a close friend of the ,Rev. Dr. Talmage. His wife' and. daughters had been "Catholics for several years, and the former attributes at-tributes her husband's conversion' fo her daily prayer that he might be vouchsafed the light of heaven ere he departed from this life. Jit. Rev. Bishop P. JV Garrigan of Sibux City ably expounded, in a recent sermon,." the doctrine of free will, and sin. The bishop maintained that it is impious to attribute the authorship of sin to God. The divine Author of our being endowed man with free will and man alone is responsible for the sinful abuse of his powers. As God is infinitely in-finitely just and-holy,, man cannot'be permitted to escape this responsibility, but will be held Accountable for his every voluntary act. Most Rev. J. J. "Glennon, Archbishop of St. Louis, v arrived in Jefferson City Tuesday evening and appeared that night before a legislative committee in the house to argue ' in . behalf - of the passage of certain divorce.' laws designed de-signed to eliminate the evils .of divorce. It was the' Archbishop's 'first appearance appear-ance before' a legislative -committee and his discussion ; of .the ' marital relation and the evils of divorce and the sanctity sanc-tity of the home":Was one' of the most beautiful" and . profound disquisitions ever heard 1iipon. the subject. His remarks were , extemporaneous, and were not reduced to writing. This is most-unfortunate. If a stenographic-report of that speech could be. had and Circulated among the members of the house and senate it is not likely that any opposition could exist to the bills favored by the Archbishop, for it was the opinion of all present that there never was such an address upon such a subject in the Missouri capitol. Jefferson City (Mo.) Democrat. The'highest standard of morality, in the world today is that which is upheld up-held by our. Catholic women. - The most beautiful of all the virtues seems to be ' their own particular heritage. And they are not-ungrateful to-, the aints who went 'before to teach them. , how to live. Rev. P. J. Murphv, C. S.i r. . - - |
