Show BAPTIST PRAISES CATHOLICS. The Banrtist ministers qf New York and vicinity had their anriual luncheon recently. The meeting was the last for the season. Before the luncheon there were a number of speeches in the auditorium. au-ditorium. Rev. Dr. C. L. Rhodes, secretary sec-retary of the American Baptist Missionary Mis-sionary union, took the ministers to task for discussing trivial topics in their weekly meetings. "You talk too much about Daniel and Egypt." he said, "instead of bringing yourselves to discuss your present day problems and what is being done for the spread of God's kingdom today. ! "For instance. Dr. A. Lincoln Moore here told me the other day that up In his parish, that of the Riverside Baptist Bap-tist Church, he knows of two apartment apart-ment houses, one of which has seventy-two seventy-two families and the other forty families fam-ilies living within its walls, in the first named but three families of the seventy-two are connected with- any church, and In the last named one. Dr. Moore adds that he cannot get into that apartment house to reach those people. Why aren't you discussing it? "I have been severely criticised for saying that I thank God that there has been a Catholic Church and that it has had an American branch. But I reiterate it, rather than take it back.' How in the world. 1 ask, could the great tide of -immigration that has turned itself toward this country in the last, half century -and mote have been retained within the fold of the Christian Church without the great molding influence that the American branch of the Catholic Church has given it? I again thank God for the Catholic Church." |
