The Review of Reviews quotes the following tribute to the priesthood of Ireland, with the simple but sufficient comment that it may be commended to all "No Popery" agitators : The Irish priests. . .have taught the people a religion which penetrates their lives, and which in its essential features is not far from the spirit of Christ. Such a religion is not to be taught by words. The man who imparts it must understand it and possess it in his own soul. American Catholics. It is assuredly clear that the social body is seriously suffering. There are misconceptions misconcep-tions amongst all classes as to rights and duties. Social relations are still in the main regulated by brute force, mere selfishness and unbridled greed, without sufficient regard to what justice and humanity hu-manity prescribe. The spirit of discontent and revolt re-volt against such conditions is rife among the multitudes. mul-titudes. Catholics will fail in their duty, if, with the spiritual resources at their command, they do not try to lead the way to a better time. The only remedy for the defects of the present system, the theorists say, is to level to the ground the edifice of civilization and build anew upon other foundations founda-tions than those laid by Christ. Such a scheme would involve them in disorders immeasurably greater than those it professes to cure. |
