Show THE SEATTLE FAIR. The Alaska-Yukon exposition has been well advertised, ad-vertised, and people who had any doubts as to the immense proportion? of the fair and the ability of .Seattle to carry the exposition through are beginning begin-ning to realize that they misjudged our fair neighbor neigh-bor of the northwest. It is said that the preparations prepara-tions of the fair are far advanced; farther advanced, indeed, that the original plans call for at the pres.- ; ent time, and that the exposition will throw open its gates on the opening day with the whole affair in a nract.icrtllv eniTinlpto onn4l4in - . The enterprise ia a ten-million-dollar affair. Of this amount the city of Seattle contributed a million mil-lion and a half. The county and state also pay into tho enterprise a goodly sum each, and the national government contributes $600,000, a very inconsiderable inconsid-erable amount when compared to the contributions made to the Columbian exposition and the fairs at Buffalo, St. Louis and Jamestown. However, we believe $000,000 wa9 all the management of the Seattle fair asked for; it asked for no loan from the government, as was done by the other expositions we have mentioned. This limited contribution by the national government has not prevented the Seattle Seat-tle people from building their exposition grounds in a little better time than was at first anticipated, and they have had the money to pay cash for all ! they had to spend. With this good beginning, which is rather unique in the history of national expositions, there yet remains only one other thing to place the Seattle fair in a class all by itself, and that is for the gates to close at the appointed time with enough money to meet the expenses, and this depends upon the people largely. Seattle expects the whole country lo attend, and they have prepared a show worth while. If anything should prevent the attendance expected, and there is a deficit to' meet, the deficit will not fall upon the public treasury either local or national. The promoters of the enterprise will make good the deficiency, and Seattle will have the distinction dis-tinction of preparing her exposition and breaking all records in carrying through the great work. |
