Show King Humbert, has now been dead just four years, yet so well were his remains embalmed at the time of. his murder that his appearance has remained re-mained entirely unchanged in a perfect state of preservation. King Victor Emmanuel was able to assure himself of this the other day, when the corpse of Humbert was transferred from the temporary tem-porary tomb in the Pantheon to the magnificent sarcophagus in which he is henceforth to lie. After the celebration of mass, the service for the dead was recited by the clergy, and then the coffin, which had been brought -into the center of the- Pantheon, was opened, in order that the prime minister, Sig. Giolitti, as crown notary, might certify to the iden- tity of the defunct monarch. Victor Emmanuel remained immovable for a long time, gazing on the remains of his father, then turned, thc guiyrd of cuirassiers cui-rassiers saluting in the meantime with their sabres. Then the priest pronounced the benediction, the coffin was reclosed and resealed, and placed by. twelve non-commissioned officers of the bodyguard in its new and final resting place. |
