Show Johnson, Cutler In Tennis Finals; DeRay Crocket Wins Joe Johnson, Preston high school coach, and Dr. Orvid Cutler Cut-ler battled then- way into tlik finals fi-nals of the 1940 city tennis tournament tour-nament this week. The duo have been the dominating figures in local lo-cal tennis tourneys for the past few yearg and they came through as expected to battle for the championship now held by Johnson. John-son. They are expected to clash for the title Monday. While the senior division of the tourney was waiting for the ail important final clash the junior and boys divisions of the tourney were completed. De Ray Crockett just out of junior high, pulled a mild upset when he turned back DeVoj Gill in the surprisingly easy fashion of of 6-2, 6-4. Gill was a stalwart on the high school team last your but had played very little during , the summer months and thus fell before the steady play of the i up and coming Crockett. In the boys division, Richard Hendricks gave evidence that he will be one of Preston's leading racquet wielders within a few years when he handily raced thru all competition and then turned back David Carlson in the finals by the acore of 6-2, 6-2. The doubles competition just started this week and will probably prob-ably be completed next week some time. Results will be in next week's issue. |
