Show Impressive Services Held For Charles Shumway Funeral services were conducted in Clarkston Sunday for Charles Shumway, 92, who died Thuioda.. at tire home of his daughter Mrs. Maud Butters, in Dayton. Death came from causes incident to age. He had been living at his dattgh ters home during, the ast two years. , Mr. Shumway was reputedly the oldest native-born Utahn . living and a Cache Valley builder who had become recognized with the religious and civic progress oi northern Utah. He was born in Salt Lake City, August 10, 1848, the son of Charles and Louise Miunerly Shumway. His parents were among the original origi-nal Mormon pioneers from Nauvoo. and were in the company which first crossed the ice at Nauvoo on the way west. The family moved to Cache valley val-ley and settled first in Wellsville, Utah. Charles carried the first regular maail from Brigham City, Utah, to Wellsville by pack mule. Later he was one of the first set-lers set-lers of Mendon, Utah. During most of his adult life however, he resided resid-ed in Clarkston, leaving there two years ago. He served as mayor of Clarkston Clark-ston and during that time the elec trie light and culinary water systems sys-tems were installed. Mr. Shumway was an ardent church worker. He filled two missions mis-sions one to England and the other to the southern states. He served as president of the Seventy quorum in Clarkston for many years, superintendent of the YMMIA, and was a worker in the Logan temple. He married Sarah Jardine on September 29, 1S73, and Agnes Jardine on September 5, 1S79. From those marriages eleven children chil-dren were born, nine of whom survive. sur-vive. The nine sons and daughters who survive are John J. Shumway and Mrs. Luccttia Thompson of Garland; Gar-land; W. P. Shumway of Preston; Mrs. Agues Fife and R. F. Shumway Shum-way of Logan; Mrs. Maud Butters of Dayton; Dell Shumway of Ogden; Og-den; Mrs. S. L. Owens of Safford. Arizona; and A. H. Shumway of Clarkston; 43 grandchildren and 44 great-gra ndchildren. Bishop Seymour Thompson of Clarkston presided at the services. Prayers were offered by Delos Thompson of Brigham City, Utah, and II. .'.. Godfrey of Clarkston. Music was rendered by the Clarkston Clark-ston Relief Society chorus and the Preston male quartet -consisting oi Panicl Johnson, Chase Kearl, Orson Or-son Hansen, and Lorin -Johnson. Daniel Johnson also sang a- nolo. ! Speakers who praised his active ! life included Wendell Godfrey of Cornish. Flah; Bishop Charles Shumway ot Treasurelon ; Jamos B.
