Show INDEPENDENCE DAY.... 1941 Independence Day this year bears a special significance to Americans, for this nation finds itself practically the last stronghold of the great democratic form of government which July 4 signifies. Democracy has been all but exterminated in a world gone mad . . . and even in this nation Democracy is on trial. We have stated our determination to become the "arsenal of democracy" in an effort to halt the surge of "isms" who spread their doctrines with military might. Yet our efforts to arm ourselves and invaded nations has been seriously retarded by fifth columnists and parasites within who operate within the protection of our fundamental freedoms. The real test is yet to come. If democracy is to survive, this nation must be able to bring all subversive elements under control, industry, and labor must bury the hatchet, and in fact as well as proclamation proc-lamation the U. S. must become the "arsenal of democracy" and we must rearm ourselves so as to be impregnable to invasion from within with-in and without. Our problems on this anniversary of our freedom is one that should give us pause. Americans must think clearly and deeply if democracy is to hurdle the greatest threat i. has faced since our forefathers fore-fathers fought to break the chains of despotic tyranny. Yet in spite of the grave plight the world is in, we in this nation na-tion can still be glad we are Americans thankful we still have freedom free-dom to think, to speak, to worship and to work as we choose. |
