Many senators are insisting that Dorothy Schiff Backer, publisher of the New York paper, be held to account for the scurrilous attack inspired by her publication. Addison T- Smith, who ropre. sented the Second Idaho ditsrtct in congress from 1912 to 1933, and since then has served as an associate asso-ciate member of the board of veterans' vet-erans' appeal, recently retired from official life in the nation's capital. Mr. Smith's associates on this board honored him at a luncheon recently, at which General Gen-eral Frank T. Ilines, administrator administra-tor of veterans' affairs, was one of the guests. Trior to his congressional congres-sional term, Mr. Smith served as secretary of Senator Heyburn and for 40 years has been int innately connected Willi the development of the Gem State, throughout w.;ch time he was active as a Republican This distinguished Idahoan, who will observe his S01.li birthday this year is still youthful and possesses energy and vitality He states that he does not propose to lead an inactive in-active life, and undoubtedly will maintain an alert interest In public pub-lic affairs. Discovery of a new, high-grade deposit of mercury-bearing ore in the Yellow Pine area or Valley County, Idaho, has been reported by Director Sayers of the U S. Bureau of Mines, his development resulted from explorations by tho interior department, and may prove of great importance to the nation's war product ion srvedule. Director Sayers reports that tests show there is ore averaging 11 pounds of mercury per ten, with one five-foot section averaging 22 pounds. Several vital tungsten deposits de-posits have been located in Idaho during the past few years, adding materially to the stale's presfigo as a leading mineral, producer. payment of tariff duties involves merely the transfer of funds from one pocket of Uncle Sam to an other. There is unity and determination determin-ation to win this war, but policies should not retard the development of industries in our own country, nor prevent the fullest utilization of cur numan and material resources. re-sources. After the war our marKeis will be under tremendous pressure from the offering of excess war supplies here, and I asked the committee com-mittee why we should not wait until un-til the full impact of this has passed pass-ed before we commit ourselves to a permanent policy of trade relations rela-tions with other nations. Such proposed pro-posed trade treaties should not be made to cover a period beyond the duration of the present war, because be-cause it is impossible to contemplate contem-plate now the economic conditions which will exist throughout the world when this war has ended. As I stressed these facts, I urged the committee to exercise extreme caution in making trade commitments commit-ments which later may hamper the United States in the development of the broad policies which will be necessary to knit and to hold to-geUier to-geUier a bankrupt world. The house of representatives recently re-cently made some reductions in appropriations for the department of agriculture for 1943, in line with suggestions made by the White House that non-defense spending be 'Curtailed. However, the senate on May 13 voted to restore $25,-000,000 $25,-000,000 to the farm security administration admin-istration for rural rehabilitation and grants, and also increased from $70,000,000 to $125,000,000 the amount of funds which the FSA may borrow from the RFC to finance fi-nance its program. The senate thus added about $80,000,000 to the authorizations voted by the house for this agency. The argument used by senate administration leaders to justify this action was a request by the president ior increases in-creases totaling $105,000,000 to expand ex-pand food production. In view of recent presidential statements that congress must determine where reductions re-ductions may be made in non-defense spending, it is likely there will be some controversy in the conference between the two branches ,and that the house may be reluctant to approve these huge senate increases. Politics has been purportedly adjourned ad-journed for the duraion of the war in the interest of national unity, but "smear" campaigns have already al-ready appeared as a forerunner of the 1942 elections. This was disclosed dis-closed on May 20, when the senate was Informed by Majority Leader Barkley of the exposure by the FBI of false charges against Senator Sen-ator Walsh of Massachusetts, Democratic Dem-ocratic chairman of the senate of the senate naval affairs committee. |
