Show Burley Invades IndianGrCamgJnI Box Elder To Be Seen Here Wednesday Following the 20 to 1 defeat handed them by the Logan Grizzlies Griz-zlies last Friday the Preston Indians In-dians worked hard the past week for another tough encounter this Friday with the Burley Bobcats This game will be followed with one more tough practice game oil Wednesday, September 25, with the Box Elder high school Bees, before they open their regular league competition with Malad here on October 4. Last Friday in an informal scrim, mage session the Logan team took the measure of the lctcal team 20 to 7 as they began moving with the opening kickoff and pushed over two touchdowns before the Preston squad knew they were in a ball game. They made then third touchdown in the first halt also to completely dominate the first part of the game. But Just as Logan had things in rnmman.I in the first half Preston took command of the game in the second half. Although they failed to score but one touchdown they had Logan's bajck to the wall thru-out thru-out the half. Preston's score came following a forty-yard run by substitute sub-stitute Quarterbaek Sid Garrett. The long run set up the play for a touchdown two plays later. Glen Oliverson, ace quarternac of the Preston team, received a knee injury on the third play of the game and was taken from the game before he had a chance to carry the ball. As a result Captain Cap-tain Marcel Chatterton was shifted shift-ed to the tailback position and he carried the all on nearly every play of the game. Near the end he broke loose for a long run but was brought down from behind as he tired badly. Last week's workouts saw Coach Joe Johnson shifting his men freely in an attempt to find the best working combination. Ralph Bergquist seems certain of holding down the center position as he played a bang-up game at Logan. The guard positions are wide open with four candidates all about even. Last week John Smith and Therold Nielsen took over thb starting assignments but they did not show up quite to expectations in their first game and they aire receiving a merry battle for first string berths from scrappy little Allen Stephenson and Sophomore i Dean Palmar. A likely change may find one of the two latter candidates candi-dates going into the running guard spot and Nielsen going to tackle in place of either Darrell Drury or Blaine Taylor. Newell Johnson has been showing plenty of fight in practice however and may see plenty of action in the Burley game. At the end positions the steady Bill Kerr and the tall, rangy Duane Hobbs seem to have the inside track. Kerr can always be depend, ed upon to play a good game while Hobbs,, although only a junior, is one of the best pass receivers to hit Preston in a number of years. If Oliverson's knee is completely complete-ly recovered he will certaintly start at the signal-barking post but if it isn't Sid Garrett will likely get the nod. Although not as shifty shif-ty as some of the otrer tail-backs Garrett is a fine kickej- and passer and shows a fine 'Change of pace to elude tacklers. At the half back posts George Johnson and Blaine Lemmons take the spotlight. Johnson is a hard tackier and blocker and will do much in helping to clear the way for the ball-carrier. Maircel Chatterton who captained the 1939 eleven to an undefeated and untied record in Idaho last year will be back again to take over the plunging duties. He was reelected last Friday just before leaving for the Logan game to cap tain the squad again during the coming year. The game next Wednesday, September Sep-tember 25, with Box Elder here will also be one of the finest games of the season. The Utah school is known for producing fine football teams and this year's eleven is expected to be equally strong. |
