Show sPreston High Musicians Win 15 Firsts In District Meet ! The Preston High School, unuei ! the direction oJ Stephen Lundquist, cairving on the excellent traditions of tiie past, won 15 first divisions in the District Music Festival held in Montpelier. April 25 and 2G. All the soloists in vocal and instrumental, in-strumental, the ensemble and orchestra or-chestra competition was held on Friday. Despite the fact that the weather man reigned supremo and Preston was listed last in every event, the students showed excellent excel-lent courage by overcoming these odds. The Preston High School Band, willi Wilber Jensen acting as drum major, won a first division with three concert numbers, and later on in the afternoon, another first with their marching band. According to the judges the outstanding group participation of Friday was the Preston orchestra, with Vauna Barton as concertmaster and Stephen Ste-phen Lundquist as director. They were the only orchestra to receive a first division. Two string ensembles, the first being composed of Marian Bow-den, Bow-den, Vauna Barton, Clara Marie Rowell and Calvin Morrison, and the second ensemble with Dorothy Tanner, Radia Morrison and Vauna Barton; each were awarded first division ratings. Reed Maughan, Nolan, Sharp and Shirley Johnson comprised the woodwind ensemble, and received a second division. Individual vocalists: Ned! Stock.; and Billie K. Hurd, baritones, re- I ceived first division ratings. Edith Baugh, Nada Fryer and Nelcla Spademan, sopranos, were awarded third division and Anna Harding, alto, won a second division. In, the individual contests Vauna Barton, violinist, won a second rating; rat-ing; Lloyd Beckstead, violinist, won a( third division on tlie viola! Of the thirty flute soloists entered at Montpelier, only two first division di-vision ratings were awarded, one to Lava and the other to Neal'l-Iart of Preston. Joy Bickmore winning first division di-vision on the snare drum was complimented com-plimented highly by Clair Johnson the judge. Vern Dean Condie won a first place rating on the baritone horn, Blaine Taylor, first with hia trombone, and Beth Smith, twirte,-for twirte,-for the Preston High Band showed excellent possibilities by winning I i a first division rating. Piano soloists, Dorothy Tame. and Gloria Wilcox won ,'.! Clixio McAllister a second. A t'Ci decision of the Acapella Hi lr rating' is still pending and will 1,4 be announced until next week.
