Show Franklin County Sugar Beet Harvest To Begin October 1 1 FACTORY TO BEGIN SLICING OCTOBER 13 Agricultural Supt. Jed Lewis Issues Statement To Growers Harvesting of sugar beets will tart in Franklin county, Friday, ,'ctober 11, at which time beet receiving re-ceiving stations will be in readiness readi-ness to receive the 1940 crop. Agriculture Agri-culture Superintendent Jed Lewis ennounced today. The company expects to harvest approximately 10.000 tons this season. Mr. Lewis, urged growers wilh a small acreage or with a good harvesting crew to delay their harvest until later in the month, as following the heavy n'ains, beets r.re making a very heavy growth and the longer they are left in the ground, the more tons they .will yield per acre. The company will pay for beeta delivered in November as soon as all deliveries are made so the grower will not have to wait un til December 15 for his check for the beets delivered in November. Growers are urged to inspect their beet lifters and put them in good shape. A lifter with a dull point or out of adjustment breaks off a large portion of many beets. Another source of loss is over loading trucks. See that trucks are properly loaded so beets will not be scattered along the highway. high-way. Growers are urged to supervise their toppers as properly topped beets mean less haulage and tare. Frozen beets cause the greatest delay. See that all beets are hauled haul-ed the day they are topped. Beet boxes should also be put in good shape as delay at the dumps is both irritating and costly to every- one. The factory will start slicing the bees October "13. Approximately 250 men will be employed for the run at either the factory or iu the receiving plants. |
