Show I SWINE PROBLEMS IS TOPIC AT FARM MEET WEDNESDAY Professor Rasmussen of the Ani mal Husbandry, Department of the USAC led the discussion at the j regular meeting of the Franklin county farmers at tiie high school j agricultural room Wednesday. The meeting stressed swine feeding and management. Professor Rasmussen pointed out that there were about six important minerals for hogs which if not fed the farmer 'could not expect to obtain ob-tain the most efficient gains from his feeding program. These minerals miner-als are Iron copper, 3 ., k cal cium, phosphorus and suit. ': It was pointed out- that the lack of iron and copper would be very apt to cause anemia in small pigs. Most people think of anemia as thumps, and can be prevented by the feeding of; these minerals. The adding of clean dirt to the, pen so that the. little pigs can get it will aid quite a lot to keep down real bad results It was learned during the meeting meet-ing that several of those present have had iodine troubles, and it was definitely thought that this area might .be an iodine deficient urea. If so special care should be taken to see that the sows receive needed iodine as production can be reduced up to 50 per cent by a de ficiency. The vitamins particularly reeded by hogs are A. and D. These art found quite abundantly in well cur (Continued on page S) o o Swine Problems (C'truinurd fioin pac one) ,:. alfalfa I"'" tJUL Wie common KiaillS 'i" "' Contain llH;:e V'iU- niins in tlit: required amounts. In oilier words if you are feeding hogs on grains you are very apt to obtain ob-tain very pom' gains, and of course these gains will be very expensive, it was pointed out that where hogs are red on grains alone that it would take 700 to 750 His of feed to make 100 lbs. of pork; but if the bogs are fed a balanced ration that 4011 1 1 j h; or feed would produce 100 lbs. uf pork or over. To supply those much needed minerals calcium and phosphorus, i, was suggested that we feed, alfalfa al-falfa hay, skim milk, and )one meal. It was thought best to place the bone meal mixed with salt, in an open box and let the hogs eat the mixture at will. Caution, do not start off too rapidly on this mixture, mix-ture, but gradually Increase the feeding. Tankage is also a good mineral feed hut is recommended especially as a protein feed. The meeting for Wednesday the l!)lh will be Electric Fences, their use, value, care and dangers. All Interested are urged to attend, n O |
