Show Future Farmers Know Their Spuds Letho Auger, Ronald Geisler and Warren McEntire accompanied by Mr. Craner visited the Idaho Spud Snow at Shelley where the boys competed wiih other schools of outheastern Idaho for honors in the grading and judging of potatoes. pota-toes. The boys were to grade SO pota toes as to U. S. No. 1, U. S. No. 2, and culls. They then had ten potatoes pota-toes to grade and give oral reasons, rea-sons, telling just why the potato was placed a U. S. No. 1, or U. S, No. 2. In the judging ojf samples the goys judged two samples of russet seed potatoes and one sample sam-ple of bliss seed potaties. These samples were judged on uniformity uniformi-ty in size, shape, freedom from disease, freedom from mechanical injury, and triteness in variety type. The Preston team placed first with a score of 952.2 out of a possible pos-sible 1125 points. Rigby was second sec-ond with 891.2; and Midway third with 886.5; Rexburg fourth with 885.3; Salmon fifth with. C75.2; Shelley sixth with 826.0; Grace seventh with 819.9; Ucon eighth witb 778.5 and Downey ninth with 670.6. The Preston boys desired to do the job up right and as a result the first three high boys of the contest were from Preston. First Letho Auger. Score 324.8. Second Ronald Geisler. Score 316.6. Third Warren McEntire. Score! 310.6. The boys returned Wednesday night with two large banners; one for the high team of the contest and one for the high man of the contest. The boys report a good trip and state that there were some very excellent seed and commercial com-mercial potatoes on exhibit at the State Spud Show. o o |
