Show Death Takes Respected Veteran Monday morning the scores of friends and acquaintances of John W W. Seaman 87 a highly respected citizen of this community and a noted civil war veteran were grieved to learn that death had taken him Only a short time ago he went to Salt Lake City for a visit and while V there made an address before the Republican Republican Republican Re Re- publican club of that city He returned Saturday but although he enjoyed his trip very much he suffered from the strain of travel and anda a weak heart and gradually weakened until he died M Monday morning with with- out apparent suffering Mr Seaman was born bora in New York in 1943 He joined the Union naY navy at atthe atthe atthe the opening of the civil war at the age of 18 and through the entire struggle with honor I He was quiet well acquainted with Pres Lincoln and had the honor of voting yoUng for him for president of the United d States At the close of the Civil War he came to Utah arriving in BaIt Salt Lake City in to 1868 1888 staying there sever several l years when he was waa called on a mission to Arizona leaving in 1873 to take charge of saw and grist mills to be put in operation The party ed such opposition from the Indians that church authorities ordered that he remain in southern Utah After er he came from Salt Lake Late City he first sett settled ed in Kanab where the first saw sawmill sawmill mill mm was started under his direction He spent his life ute actively engaged In Industry in that locality until six years ago he came to Cedar City to make his home In 1870 he married Alice Wright in Salt Lake City eight children re resulting resulting resulting re- re from the union five of ot whom are living Fred S.
