Armstrong 81 years of age passed from this life after suffering for several months from cancer and was laid at final rest after arter impressive services in the tabernacle Sunday afternoon I The building was filled to capacity with friends and acquaintances from Cedar City and surrounding settlements settle settle- settlements ments who had come to pay their last tribute of res respect Ct to a man who had won the high esteem ad rever rever- care of the people by his upright and manly life his honest and sincerity of purpose and his devoutness to the gospel whose precepts and principles h he had lived as near as it was humanly human human- ly possible Coun Kenneth Macfarlane officiated ed at the services They Were opened b by the choir singing Sweet is Thy Work My God My King after which Elder Myron D. D Higbee offered prayer The choir then sang The Lord IsMy is isMy isMy My Light Elder Wm V. V Walker a life long fri friend nd and neighbor was the first speaker who said in part that it had been a request of the deceased that he speak a few words at his funeral services The speaker said he had learned to love Bro Armstrong and stated that he had been been a father to nil all He was everybody's friend he has always been a faithful worker in the church and responded to ev every ry c call made upon him He has raised a g good god d family one one hon honored red arid r respected re respected by all who know them who have been a blessing to their father and whose pride they were Elder H. H H. H Lunt was the next speaker and said that that the deceased had spent nearly 80 years in this community and was a constant work er in church affairs from early man hood to his death He Ile was Sunday School superintendent when I 1 was a amere amere amere mere boy and I 1 have grown up under his tutorship ever since He lie was a good man and I honor his memory Mrs Annette in her sweet and impressive manner manner sang the beautiful hymn Face to o. o Face ac ac by Ivy Webster at the piano Pres Wm R. Pratt exploring company For many years BrO Armstrong was S Supt pt of Sunday Schools He has filled a mission in the world and filled tilled a mission in doing stake temple work He Ie was one of ot the first to say sayto sayto sayto to anyone called in positions of responsibility re- re am behind you I feel this Is la not a time of mourning it is I. isa a time of thanks thanksgiving We will miss him his counsel but he has gone to toa a rich reward lie He has gone to meet his beloved wife and the they are are I ing together today Mrs Hazel Granger sang Oh My Father after which Dp lip Wood spoke a short time saying in part I deem it an honor t to speak at the funeral of Bro Armstrong lie He was a loyal Saint and always sought first the kingdom of God He lIe visited the sick constantly and endless were the requests made t to bring him into the home of the afflicted so 10 great was was the confidence in him Bro Armstrong was a man who always loved his fellowmen During his last illness he called me in to his bedside and told me many things relative to his funeral He said to to me me God bless you you and these were the last words I 1 heard him speak llis Ills His in influence influence in in- fluence has been far reaching he has soothed those in affliction and all that know him sing words of praise of him His life tife was spent in the service of the Master and he was ready to go when the time came The services s came to a close by Ray Lyman and Mrs Violet Urie Urle singing Oh It Is Wonderful followed fol fol- lowed by Elder Chas Heyborne pronouncing pro flouncing the benediction BIOGRAPHICAL Jos H. H Armstrong was born in St. St Louis Mo October 14 1846 the son of John C. C and Mary Kirkbride Armstrong Armstrong Armstrong Arm Arm- strong who crossed the plains in 1847 arriving in Salt Lake City September 23 of that year He lie ate se sego o roots and pig pia w weeds eds many times for his breakfast in Inthe the early pioneer days of Ut Utah h securing this kind of food on Capitol hill where now stands the State Capitol building He lie watched the laying of the cor car ner stone of the great great Salt Lake temple in 1858 and also attended the dedication of the same building During Dur ing the ch of-Johnson's of army he was taken t to American Fork and cared for by friends until recalled to Salt Lake City He joined the first Sunday School organization in 1856 and has always held some office in the organization since that date In 1863 he came to Cedar City with John Middleton and wife to live with James Simkins October 9 1860 1866 he married Mary Ann Smith in the old Endowment House in Salt Lake take City moving back to Cedar Ceda In the fall fan of 1868 to make his home He served as ss as city councilman city marshal marhal and precinct constable in this city in early days He was active in guarding the lives and property of the settlers against the Indian raids His His horse saddle and gun were al always always always al- al ways kept where they could be had at a moments moment's notice ready for any emergency He lIe was ordained a Seventy in 1868 1863 by C C. J Arthur and was called on a mission to Great Britian in 1883 and andin andIn andin in 1884 r returned home because of ill Gi health He w s called to be Stake Supt of Sunday Schools in 1885 and served 22 ye years ra in this capacity lie He served as second assistant in the Stake Y M M. K E I I. I A A. for or 8 years and was Th Then tailed Called on a mission to the Eastern States being released in 16 months because of ill health He lie served as senior president of the 63 quorum of Seventies and one of the seven presidents of the same and was was was' ordained a High Priest Jan 21 1911 hav having ng been an active ward teacher also nearly 60 years In 1896 he was called caned as u an ordinance worker in the St. St George temple The deceased leaves seven even children departure four boys and three girls as follows Jos S.
