Commerce met at the Cedars Hotel Monday noon and after partaking partaking par par- taking of the excellent repast provided provid provid- ed by that hostelry Mayor Granger was called upon to present some of the problems of the city for discussion discussion discus discus- sion slon as al was also Councilman Ray Lunt In commencing his talk the mayor called attention to the attitude of the people towards the officials of the city on many things the attitude being antagonism and the mayor re referred referred referred re- re to the recent visit of the Galvin Galvin Galvin Gal- Gal vin players who came from California California Califor Califor- nia and pitched th their lr tents on the vacant vacant vacant va va- cant Co op lot on Main street in di violation of the fire ordinance At the time it was feared that the outfit had not been before before before be be- fore leaving the states of California and Nevada a law being in force that no traveling troup would be allowed allowed allowed al al- lowed in the state of Utah unless it had a certificate of proper tion Word had been received from Salt Lake City that the company must w get out of the state at on once e but a day later the word came from the same source that it had been found that the I troup had had complied complied with the law In Inthe Inthe the meantime a petition had been signed 1 by y hundreds of the citizens demanding demanding de de- manding that the company be allowed allowed allow allow- ed to remain and this irrespective as asto asto I to whether they had been disinfected or not This showed antagonism against the city officials and the law although the removal of the company if it would have been done as asa asa asa a precautionary measure against the possible introducing of the dread foot and mouth disease that existed in the section of the country from which the company had come The mayor asked asked ask ask- ed that the Chamber members give their moral support in matters of this kind He lIe said it was a serious problem problem problem pro pro- blem that confronted the officials inthe inthe in inthe the matter of enforcing the ordinances ordinances ordinances ordin ordin- ances when the people or at least a large number of them sympathized and sided with the law breaker Complaints Complaints Complaints Com Com- plaints of infraction of the law had been made by citizens but they did not have the moral courage to give evidence and this fact alone had prevented prevented pre pre- vented prosecution in many instances The Mayor and council as well as the peace officers would be pleased to have the support of the citizens citizens citizens cit cit- in the upholding of law The problem of rights of way for streets and avenues in the new subdivisions subdivisions sub sub- divisions that had been created was another that confronted the city and inasmuch as the finances of the municipality municipality municipality muni muni- were almost nil the stand had been taken by the council that the city would not buy rights of way for streets and avenues In commenting upon the problem of water supply the Mayor stated that two weeks ago an investigation was I Imade made and it was found that at that time there was plenty of water for all nil culinary purposes in the city but since that time the excessive I has made a shortage and it looks as though it might get worse and finally become serious if the drought keeps up for any length of time However a considerable saving of water had been made by repairs of the water system and the replacing of feet of piping at the reservoir that had been leaking more than showed on the surface These repairs had bad been bera th the means of increasing the amount of water and he figured that with proper proper proper pro pro- per and careful use by the citizens sufficient water would be had but he emphasized the fact that there was not sufficient for irrigating gardens i I I and nd a careful watch was Vas to be maintained mainlined main main- tamed lined to prevent people from so us using using ing the water In referring to securing water for increased population that will in all be the result of the present activities in the city and vicinity it will be necessary to bring in other streams into the system It will be useless however to add more more water to o the pipe leading into the reservoir ai as that is already carrying all that can an pass through The mayor stated that he was opposed op op- posed to an increased taxation for this purpose as the people were already heavily burdened The Th money now in n the treasury could be used to o build a gallon reservoir above the present one extend the system form that cover the south and ind east part of town and the water not used by that section would be held in n the reservoir and with the overflow overflow over- over flow low run into the present one thus saving the water that goes into the creek during the night time when the people are not using the system It Itis Itis Itis is is estimated that sufficient runs to the creek during the night to supply an equal number of inhabitants that are now being supplied by the system If this water that escapes during the time the people are not using the system system system tem could be held in a reservoir there would be plenty for nearly as many again people as is being supplied now i If the proposition of a new reservoir reservoir reservoir reser reser- voir was taken up up and put over it should be built high enough in the canyon to give plenty of head for firefighting firefighting fire firefighting fighting purposes This could be easily done and at no greater cost than to build it near the altitude of ol the he present plesent one The mayor stated that it was impossible impossible impossible im im- im- im possible to give a correct outline o of city problems in so short a time am and thought it would be a good thing for a meeting of the people where the problems could be gone into in a comprehensive comprehensive comprehensive com com- and complete manner In Inclosing Inclosing Inclosing closing he urged that the Chamber 0 of f Commerce extend their support in matters pertaining to the betterment of the city in Mr Lunt a member of the city council followed Mayor Granger an and spoke along the same lines expressing expressing expressing express express- ing himself as being favorable toward the plan of bringing the Cluff Spring Springwater Springwater Springwater water to the system Preceding the talks by Mayor Mayo Granger and Councilman Lunt the th members
