Show Nine-Year Old Girl Has Narrow Escape Gwendolyn Jones, the 9-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred H. Jones, barely escaped a tragic death Sunday afternoon, when she was run down by an automobile driven by Mel-vin Mel-vin Peterson of Centerfield. The little girl -was thrown heavily to the pavement pave-ment in front of the Shell gas station sta-tion and sustained a basicranial skull fracture, abrasions of the face, a badly bad-ly bruised body and a deep gash on the leg. Gwendolyn was picked up and taken to her' home, where first-aid treatment was administered. Suspecting Suspect-ing that the injury was more severe than first contemplated, Dr. Merrill of the Salina hospital, took the girl to Salina for observation. An examination examin-ation showed a slight fracture and treatment is being given for this condition. con-dition. The girl never was rendered unconscious and had her faculties all the time. Wednesday evening her condition con-dition was reported as progressing for the better and if no complications arise she will soon be able to leave the hospital. Reports of the accident are to the effect that Peterson was headed south, and when near the gas station he observed Gwendolyn attempting to cross the street. Peterson sounded his horn and applied the brakes. He was unable to bring his car to a full stop until he had skidded some forty feet. When the car hit the girl she was thrown heavily to the ground, and the impact of her head on the pavement was heard more than two hundred feet. Eye witnesses stated that the car passed over the body of the girl and when the coast was clear she was able to scramble from the street. At the time of the accident there was little traffic on Main street. Officers Of-ficers have started an investigation to determine the fault, if any, that resulted re-sulted in the Jones girl being so severely injured. |
