Show THE NEW DEMOCRACY address delivered november 1895 by julius F taylor I 1 on this occasion to present to you a few plain conclusions founded upon facts and history and tending to prove that there is a nw new democracy or rather perhaps a new feature to the old Pem democracy A few years ago it would have been a novelty to see or hear of a colored democrat and even now iu in some communities they are rare species but my friends there are thousands of them in the united states and their number is increasing as intelligence and reason dawn upon the mind of the colored race I 1 therefore assert that the time has come for the colored people to i divide on party lines aj in time long past the colored people were taught to believe and i many believe it yet that the word democrat meant everything that atvas opposed to the interest and welfare of the negro the name was supposed to embody an buvet and dislike of all our popple peb pleon on account of their race and cr for that it meant AL a desire de at to beep h i I 1 slaver slavery y the mind body and soul and that thai ever since the fortunes of 0 war struck the man acles from the slaves that the word democrat meant the incarnation of oppression outrage and wrong starting ng out ont with this wrong impression in the mind of the colored nan man it perhaps is not to be wondered at that he treats with disdain and fear the thought of his b being edg i a aj democrat this was his early im J en grafted there by wily wil V and dishonest politicians andere and we all know how lasting our erst and ana earliest impressions are but bat my friends lends fi the time has come when ve must awaken from this nightmare of falsehood and open conr eyes to the true reality we find about us i let us now unfold the pages of history and see if we have hare not been misled in our early impressions and later conclusions first let us see aft whether or not the democrats or the people of the southern states were the first and only people who favored the establishment of the slavery of the black man in in the united states according to ill ab accepted history ii a dutch vessel sailed up the james riya in iii with a cargo of new york and pennsylvania not only tolerated slavery but it actually existed within their borders until long after the revolutionary war all the slaves during daring the early period of this century were the product of the african slave trade the slaves being brought by the shipload direct from africa and the islands of the tropics the new england settlers being expert seamen and avaricious sailors engaged largely in the slave trade for the immense pro profit there was in the business so thousands of these poor creatures were yearly landed in the colonies by the shrewd yankees who afterward 1 became ee ame the ranting abolitionists it soon became apparent that slavery could not ba made profitable to the owners except in the milder portions of the country owing to the nature of the negroes and their long continued habitation of a tropical land hence the institution gradually gra duall y died out in the colder latitudes and increased in the warmer or southern portions of the country this result was in accordance with a natural law and not the result of any difference or distinction between the white people of the he northern and southern portions of the new world in fact the history of each shows that the early set tiers of virginia and massachusetts of georgia and pennsylvania and of many of the others were all from england all of the same blood the same education the same sam e religion and ana they all received their law from the same source viz the common law of england As time went by the sturdy new englander looked with a jealous eye upon the ease and comforts enjoyed by their southern neighbors neighbor saud and he naturally attributed aith the difference in their situations situation sto to the result of the advantage of having servants to do d 0 the hard labor incident upon the establishment of civilization in anew continent thiv thi feeling of envy grew year by year until it blossomed out in an active opposition of slavery not upon any moral or benevolent grounds bai in a desire to heck check the wonderful growth and prosperity of their brethren in the south at the cloge of the war of the revolution congress Con gres submitted the trade and its connection conw action with and support from the northern people of the united states I 1 will now for a few minutes speak upon the recognition of slavery and imd the laws respecting the colored people in the north and east prior or to the civil war we have seen that our northern fathers were not cot only slave owners but slave trad ers wid and when it became evident that slavery could not be maintained with profit they sold then their slaves to the planters of the south and turned abolitionists thousands of our race ra c e were thus shipped from the new england shores shares to pass their lives in perpetual perpetu af bondage in the south from a rapid survey of the lava of new england and other northern states I 1 can only refer to afew of the many that proves the race
