Show Good Government Party Victorious at Tuesday's Election-Christiansen Wins Again Gunnison Voters Declare for Christiansen Christian-sen and His Fellow Candidates With Majorities Ranging from 12 to 96 Heavy Vote Is Recorded at Polls. With majorities ranging from twelve to ninety-six votes the entire en-tire Good Government party ticket was swept into victory at the municipal election held in Gunnison Tuesday of this week. Parley Christiansen, successful candidate two years ago on ' the Citizens ticket, and who was turned down by the party at the primaries last month, had a majjority: over Knighton, Citizens party nominee, of twenty-eight votes. Joseph Larson, running opposite H. A. Kearns for two-year councilman, had the highest majority of any of the candidates can-didates on the Good Government ticket, beating his opponent with a majority of ninety-six votes. Joe Willardson, on the Citizens ticket for two-year councilman, ran ahead of his ticket and his opponent, J. A. Tuft won out by the small margin of twelve votes. The contest was one of the most keenly fought for several years and notwithstanding the fact that the day was stormy and disagreeable disagree-able out of a possible 560 votes, 4 1 3 braved the elements and voted for their favorite candidates. The several candidates and their supporters sup-porters were out early and worked faithfully during the day to achieve the honor of election. During the morning the voting was extremely light and it was not until early in the afternoon that the clouds rolled away and the sun came out that the voters were stirred to the importance im-portance of voting and from three o'clock until the closing of the polls the election judges were kept pretty busy. With the announcement of the election of Parley Christiansen and his entire ticket, an impromptu celebration was staged and men and boys and girls, with speed-like form, soon had numerous bonfires going along Main street. The celebration was kept up until after midnight mid-night and the victors gave vent to the success of their victory in a noisy and hilarious manner. The administration that will serve the city of Gunnison for the coming com-ing two years, as selected by the voters vot-ers at Tuesday's election will be Mayor, May-or, Parley Christiansen;. Four-year councilman, J. S. Peterson; two-year councilmen, Joseph Larson, Lloyd Anderson An-derson and J. A, Tuft; Ellen Hofheins, city treasurer; and June Metcalf, elected el-ected two years ago for the 4-ycar -.. council term, is the holdover, as his term does not expire until January 1927. ' Nephi Gledhill, nominee on the Citizens ticket for city recorder, had no opposition on the ticket, and as a result his choice was almost unanimous. unani-mous. He received 203 votes of the 413 cast. C. H. Quids, former city recorder re-corder received; tjwo complimentary votes, one coming- from each district. In district) number one, where the vote was heaviest, there were 229 votes cast. On the straight voting Christiansen received 90, while his opponent, Knighton, only received 61. In district two, 184 votes were cast and on the straight voting Christiansen Christian-sen got 71 and Knighton 60. There was considerable scratching of ballots and in this Knighton cut down Christiansen's Chris-tiansen's lead made by the straight votes. Considerable scratching was also done on Kearns and Gribble, thus giving Larson and Anderson strong leads in the final count. As a rule the election was staged without a great deal of discord. There was only one challenge offered, when J. E. Metcalf. acting for the Citizens party, questioned the right of Grant Nielson. Nielson iwas sworn in nnd his vote duly cast and the incident closed. The victory of Mayor Christiansen was a big one and he has been receiving re-ceiving the congratulations of all. Du to the fact that he was the choice of the Citizens party two years ago an,d helped the party to victory and was then turned down for renomimitio'i at the primary last month, makes his winning a double victory. He was present at the primary and after Knighton had been named as the mayoralty candidate, Christiansen was taken into the fold by the Good Government party and chosen as its standard bearer. With a strong ticket named with Christiansen and with the voters determined to coniinuc a good government, the election ended with a crowning victory for the Good Government party. Municipal elections come but every ewo years. As a rule the contests waged are heated and wrath waxes warm. Tuesday's election and the day following was no exception to the rule. The voters, however, have made the choice, the election is over and everybody has settled down to normalcy nor-malcy again. |
