COMMANDER MICHIE, FLYER AND LAWYER Thomas Johnson Mlchle, Jr., commander com-mander of the Virginia department of the American Legion, was born at Northport, Long Island, N. Y., on June 7, 1S9G, of a Virginian father and a I'ennsylvanlan mother. The mother's native place was the "City of Brotherly Love," where the American nation came into being with the signing of the Declaration of Independence on the Fourth of July 149 years ago. The father's home had been at Charlottesville, Charlottes-ville, seat of the great University of Virginia, which was founded by Thomas Jefferson from whose pen had come the Immortal Declaration. The younger Michie attended the public schools at Northport from 1902 to 1905. In March, 1905, the family moved to Charlottesville. He went to the public schools there and then attended at-tended Jefferson school for boys, a prep school for the University of Virginia. Vir-ginia. He" entered the university In September, 1914, and graduated with the A. B. degree In June, 1917, completing com-pleting the full collegiate course In three years. In May before his graduation he entered en-tered the first officers' training camp held at Fort Meyer. He was transferred trans-ferred to the air service in August of ff. -' IS X Thomas Johnson Michie, Jr. that year and attended Cornell air service ground school from August to October following. In November of the first year of the war he went overseas, remaining until the year following. For the greater part of the time he was stationed at Faggia, Italy. For Eome weeks in the summer of 1918 he was at Tours, France. He was commissioned a second sec-ond lieutenant In May 1918. In January, 1919, he resumed the education which the war had Interrupted, Inter-rupted, entering the graduate and law ' schools of his alma mater. He received re-ceived the Master of Arts degree in 1920, and the Bachelor of Laws degree In 1921. He Is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Theta Delta Chl and was president of the law department In 1921. Since 1921 he has been engaged In the practice of his profession at Charlottesville. He Is now a member of the firm of Allen, Walsh & Michie. In the session of 1921-22 he was an instructor in-structor in the University of Virginia law school. A charter member of Charlottesville and Albermarle Post No. 74 of the Legion, Le-gion, Michie was adjutant of the post in 1922 and 1923 and Its commander in 1924. He was elected commander of the Department' of Virginia for the present year. |
