Show Plan to Recover Anciet Fossils Permission to excavate the bones of prehistoric animals which have been found in a quarry at the Jordan Narrows, has recently been granted the University of Utah. The work of recovering the ancient fossils was placed under the direction of Professor Profes-sor A. L. Mathews of the geology department de-partment of the University. The quarry in which the bones were found belongs to W. S. Evans of Lehi, Utah. It lies at the southern extremity of Salt Lake valley. The discovery of these fossils will throw new light on the prehistoric life of Utah. It is thought that the bones are the remains of camels, horses and rhinoceroses. Professor Mathews says that the bones were found in a bedded deposit de-posit of pure limestone, containing' as high as 98 per cent calcium carbonate carbon-ate that apparently had been derived from a thermal spring. The conclusion conclu-sion has been reached that the fossils this continent during the late Ceno-oic Ceno-oic age, a long time before the glacial gla-cial epoch or the formation of Lake Bountiful. The university has been given freedom free-dom to excavate any of the other interesting in-teresting fossils in the Jordan Narrows Nar-rows quarry, that otherwise is worked work-ed for its limestone which is used in the sugar beet industry. |
