Show WHERE OUR LIBERTY IS GOING Senator Borah's warning to the peo pie of America whose cowardice, he says, is permitting changes in our government that are destructive of liberty and happiness deserves more Ahan passing consideration. He does not openly charge the existence of an organized movement to strip the people of their liberty, but he does say reports of such a plot have been bi-oadeast in the press for several sev-eral years. The people are regulated to death. The responsibflity of the home is pushed over on the government. The work of the church is shifted to the government. The duty of the schools takes the same road. The result is private interference and official control con-trol of individual action to a point that would make the fathers of the nation froth at the mouth. For every difficulty that arises as & result of our complex civilization we look for a remedy in the creation ' of some new board of control. Every phase of business and private activity acti-vity is put in charge of some bureau or commission. These bureaus are given powers far (beyond anything ever contemplated by the framers of the constitution. They embrace the legislative, the judicial and the executive ex-ecutive functions of government and rise superior in power to the govern- j ment itself. We are rather a bad way when we ' admit the law has broken down and ' our courts are a failure, but we are ' in a worse way when the people supinely sup-inely permit Czar-like power to be handed over to bodies of petty die-' tators, without even so much as a'' word of objection.' |
