Show Promoter Must Pay Many Large Bills for Fights In these modern times a promoter has to figure on giving at least 60 per cent to the fighters and in some cases more. Out of 40 per cent he must provide an arena for the contest, he must advertise ad-vertise and exploit the card, he must hire a big staff to handle the tickets, he must pay the salaries of several hundred ushers, special police, etc. "Incidentals" alone amount to a huge sum, and after all that has been subtracted, sub-tracted, he has to whack up the net profits, because he is not in business busi-ness "on his own." Professional baseball does not carry the freight that boxing does, but it costs plenty to carry a major league baseball team through a season where the weather gamble is a large one in early spring and late fall and where the salary problem is one of ever-increasing concern. |
