Show Jacob S. Bastian Dies Result of Kick by Horse Jacob S. Bastain, one of the leading lead-ing farmers of Gunnison Valley and a resident of this city, died at the i . ' Salina hospital last Tuesday follow-' follow-' ing an operation. Sunday about noon Mr. Bastian, went to nis corral to harness a horse and was in the act of going behind the animal when the horse kicked him, both of the feet landing squarely on the stomach. The man was knocked down and a boy, close by, notified Mrs. Bastian and with her aid the stricken man was able to reach the house. In the absence of Dr. Hagan who was on, a fishing trip Dr. Merrill of Salina was called and upon arrival it was decided decid-ed to take Mr. Bastian to the hospita Immediate operation was impossib'. and it was decided to wait until Mon day at which time the stomach o; the injured man was opened and i was found that several of the intes V nes had been punctured by th heavy impact of the kick by th. horse. Realizing that it would onl; be a matter of a few hours before death would claim its victim, every thing possible was done. He lingei ed until Tuesday morning when thi angle of death came as a relief. All the children, eight girls and one boy, were notified of the serious condition of their father, and they with the wife and mother, were at the bedside of the husband and father when the life of the good man was closed in everlasting sleep. Mr. Bastian realized real-ized the end was near and up to the last minute he conversed with his children. The death of Mr. Bastian was a shock and coming as it did, cast a gloom of sorrow over the entire community, com-munity, and nis hosts of friends mourn with the stricken and heartbroken heart-broken family. Funeral services were held today and the remains were tenderly laid to "the final resting place at the Gunnison Gun-nison cemetery. Jacob Bastian was born at Lehi, on September 12th 1858, being the first child born at that city. His early life was spent in Washington county, whither the family had gone to settle. set-tle. He was a sturdy man and follow ed the vocation of cutting timber which supplied the Silver Reef mines. On March 22, 1876, he was married to Harriett Ann Taylor, at St. George. Geo-rge. In 1888 Mr. and Mrs. Bastian Settled at Loa, Wayne county, where Mr. Bastian engaged in farming and tockraising, which vocation he followed fol-lowed until the time of his death. Mr. Bastian joined the L. D.' S. -:hurch when a young man and lived i faithful life in that organization. He served as a member of the bishopric bish-opric of the Loa ward for twenty ears and filled a mission for the hurch in Denmark from January, .901 to July' 1, 1903. He superin-ended superin-ended the building of the Johnson eservoir near Fish Lake and was ictive in other notable projects. During the spring of 1917 he dis-osed dis-osed of ihis interests in Wayne coun-y coun-y and removed to Gunnison, investing invest-ing in farm lands here. Surviving the deceased are the wife and nine children, oneboy and eight girls, all of whom are married. The children are: Mrs. W. S. Roper, of Bennion; Mrs. F. E. .Brown, and Mrs Parley Reese of Loa; Mrs. Harold Erickson and Mrs. Scott Goff, of Bingham; Mrs. J. S. Peterson' of Paris, Idaho; Mrs. Moroni Jensen of Gunnison, and Anton Bastian of West Jordan. There are twenty-four twenty-four grand children and the following follow-ing brothers and sistes left to mourn the death: Gearsen S. of Salt Lake City; Bastian S. of Salina; Ludvig Alma of Sigurd; Mrs. Homer Baron of Sigurd; Mrs. Hyrum Bryan- of Loa; Chas. B. of St. George; J. Wil-ford Wil-ford of Vernal; Lewis of Knaraville; Mrs. Lou Farnsworth of Provo; Mrs. Elmer Carling of Fillmore; Mrs. P. E. Van Orden of Blackfoot, Idaho; Erasturs S. ofl Hayden, Niels" of Wles" ton, Idaho, and Mrs. Arthur Crawford Craw-ford of Enterprise. |
