Show CHAMPION TAKES COUMCUPIQ JACK DEMPS'EY MARRIES MISS TAYOR AT SAN D I E 0 : CHURCH WEDDIf-!.- Couple Decide on Nuptials A'ter Viewing Races; Will Tour World as Honeymoon Says Champion San Diego, Cal. Jack Dempsey, world's champion heavyweight pugilist, pugil-ist, and Ida Esteile Taylor, motion picture actress, who obtained a license li-cense to be married here last Saturday Satur-day were married in the evening. Dempsey and Miss Taylor, after obtaining their license from the county coun-ty clerk's office shortly before noon, went down to the race track at Tijuana Ti-juana for' the afternoon. Soon after their return to the city they went to the First Presbyterian church, where they were married by the Rev. Wallace Wal-lace M. Hamilton. On his return to the hotel, Dempsey Demp-sey announced that those present at the ceremony were Joe Benjamin, lightweight pugilist, who is a protege pro-tege of Dempsey's; Eddie Conners and Miss Helen Taylor, sister of the bride. Benamin was best man, Dempsey Demp-sey said. Dempsey had told his friends during dur-ing the afternoon that he would be married if Miss Taylor would consent, and they had planned a celebration at the hotel where he registered. Dempsey laughingly said that he would be glad to be among tnose present. Discussing his plans earlier in the day, Dempsey said that he and Mrs. Dempsey would have to postpone their honeymopn trip for a while because be-cause of business in Los Angeles. When that was finished, he said, they hoped to go on a long trip which might take them to Europe and might possibly take them around the world. Miss Taylor was rather nervous when approached by newspaper men at the courthouse. Jack hovered ovei her as if in protection. "I am almost too happy to talk," was Miss Taylor's comment at the time. But Dempsey was in a more loquacious mood. He took occasion to spike rumors as to his retirement and also to inform those present that he intended to be boss of the roost in his home after the marriage. "Miss Taylor is not the kind of girl who wants to be boss," Jack began. be-gan. "I'm going to wear the trousers after we are married. I am sure that whatever I do will be right with her. She wishes that I quit the ring, but all women are that way in regard to fighting. "But I'm not ready to retire yet, and I know Miss Taylor won't object ob-ject too hard." That ended the interview. Shortly thereafter the champion and his soon-to-be bride departed by automobile for Tijuana and the races. They returned to San Diego about 7 p. m., eluding friends and curious newspaper men. The thing had apparently ap-parently been arranged beforehand. The champion and Miss Taylor drove directly to the church and there were married in short order. They then returned to the Grant hotel, where a wedding banquet for a number of friends of both the champion and his bride was served at 9 p.. m. Chief among those not present was Jack Kearns, manager of the champion. cham-pion. He, however, was expected to arrive at any moment to congratulate his famous charge. |
