Show 1925 SUGAR SUPPLY BREAKS 1 ALL PREVIOUS RECORDS During 1925 the world's population probably will eat more sugar than ever before in history says Facts About Sugar the trade authority on this subject. At least they will have more opportunity to do so for production pro-duction this season broke all previous previ-ous records. The world crop, most of which is already made, is estimated estimat-ed at over 25,000,000 tons. This is an increase of more than 3,000,1300 tons over last year's production which was the largest crop ever made up to that time. While almost every part of the entire en-tire world has shared in the increase output the largest gain has been made j in those countries which supply the sugar used in the United States. This country is not only the largest consumer of sugar of any nation in the world but it ranks next to Cuba 1 as the largest producer. Its crop this year is nearly 2,500,000 tons. Sugar is grown under the American Flag in Louisiana, Texas, and Florida, in sixteen sugar beet growing states from Ohio and Michigan in the east to California and Washington in the West in Hawaii the Philippines, Porto-Rico and the Virgin Islands. All of those together do not supply enough eno-ugh to satisfy the American sweet tooth and the balance of the coun-" coun-" . try's requirements comes mainly from Cuba which enjoys the benefit of the American protective tariff to the extent ex-tent of being allowed to import its sugar at 20 cents less than is charged on sugar from any other country. Cuba lias increased its crop over last year by nearly a million tons and is far ahead of any country in the production pro-duction of this commodity. As a consequence of the heavy production pro-duction the price of sugar is back on the pre-war basis and scientists tell us that in proportion to its nutritive value sugar at its present prices is by far the cheapest food we can buy. At the time when the increase in the sugar tariff was proposed, in 1922, it was predicted that the raising of the duty would so stimulate production produc-tion in the United States and Cuba that sugar would be cheaper than before and this prediction is being fulfilled. |
