Show Valley Japanese Enjoy Big Picnic Trials and tribulations were forgotten forgot-ten and the spirit of having a good time predominated among the Japanese Japan-ese of Gunnison Valley and those who are farming in the northern part of the county last Sunday. It was the occasion of the first picnic to be staged by the boys and their families from the Orient and the first event proved highly successful from every standpoint. Japanese from this valley val-ley -every man, woman and child, and many families from Ft. Green, Moroni, Mt. Pleasant and other points north, numbering more than seventy, gathered at the Gunnison Reservoir park last Sunday morning for a big time. Some fifty Americans Ameri-cans had also received invitations and altogether the crowd was one of the largest gathered at the park this season. The Japanese boys proved themselves them-selves royal entertainers. At noon an elaborate dinner, consisting of Japanese foods, such as sliced bamboo, bam-boo, mushrooms, canned Jap potatoes, Japanese rice croquettes, fancy Jap eggs and many other queer and appetizing ap-petizing dishes were served. Every event was filled with thrills and both American Am-erican and Japanese vied with each other for supremacy and many of the races were close. Prizes, and good ones, were offered at every event. Sugar, frying pans, hosiery, candy and an endless variety of gifts, Collectively valued at more than $100 were given to the lucky contestants. Not alone were the Jap boys generous gener-ous with their gifts in the several contests, but during the noon hour every person at the park was given a generous treat of ice cream, pea-'.iuts pea-'.iuts and soda water. The first picnic proved a huge success suc-cess and the leaders of the colony declare that it will hereafter be a regular summer affair. |
