Show J LIONISM COURAGE TO DO j I Lionism may appear to the causal observer as nothing but an- ! I other luncheon club, organized to pdovide a weekly feed for hungry I business men who like to get together and talk shop. To us who I realize what it is, however, it bears a larger significance and has j a broader scope. I This article is not so much for members of the Lions Club as I it is for the laymen who fail to realize the purpose of our organiza-I organiza-I tion and the scope it takes in. I Lionism, it seems to me, is bigger than the individual. The I abstract idea, at least, is greater than any single person, and if clubs I live up to it they will perform the highest type of service in their I own communities. We are not philanthropists, and we have no I Utopian ideas, but in a common-sense fashion the Lions of the nation j stand ready to courageously face the forces that threaten institutions, I philosophies and ideals face them fairly and squarely and thus I find that they are fearful of the day. I Our principles are these: I Full and hearty co-operation with all other clubs, the Chamber I of Commerce and other civic organizations, in all movements in the j community which seek to promote any betterment, civic, industrial j j or educational, and any plans looking towards the elimination of I class distinction. I Promotion of public health, hygiene and sanitation, especially among those who need instruction and guidance in the care and I feeding of children. 1 Being an organization thoroughly loyal to our Government, I it is our special interest to advance education in the language, cus-I cus-I tons, ideas and Government of our country, especially among adults I of foreign birth. j Strict adherence to the highest code of ethics in business and social relations. The biggest asset to any one nation being its people, one of the cardinal points or Lionism is the cultivation of a spirit of genuine brotherhood among men. That last idea of brotherhood is not new. It's the best idea, however, that human thought has ever been able to evolve, and because be-cause of its finite perfection it has been adopted as 8ne of the cardinal cardi-nal principles of a good Lion. In line with these principles and as a direct result of their practice prac-tice Lions clubs throughout the nation have indorsed the following movements and supported the foflowing institutions: Establishment and promotion of community centers, the boy scouts movement, educational movements,' big brother and like movements, playground recreational activities, summer camps for needy boys and girls, betterment of city government and city schools, building and beautifying boulevards and parks, the establishment and furnishing of libraries and library branches, reading rooms, etc., the question of pure food and pure water, the helping of worthy local charities, establishment and maintenance of good roads, the aiding and supporting of local authorities in the maintenance of law and order, particularly with reference to radicalism, aiding the city authorities in the adoption of proper city ordinances, promotion of sanitary and health education among the poorer classes, and the support of Y. M. C. A., Y. W. C. A., Salvation Army and other like organizations. That's what Lionism is. |
