Show Gunnison Scratched By Salina Tigers Notwithstanding the fact that Gun nison ball players received a severe scratching at the hands of the Salina Sa-lina Tigers at a fiercely fought battle bat-tle at Salina last Sunday afternoon, the local lads are not satisfied with the licking and are willing to take more scratches and to this end a defi has been flung at the Gunnison Lions for a battle royal at some future date. The challange has not been accepted ac-cepted as yet but more than likely a game will be arranged for some time -during the coming week. The playing at Salina last Sunday demonstrated that the Gunnison players play-ers are fast getting the game. Though the score stood 6 to 11, with Salina holding the long end, there was evidence evi-dence of ball playing on the part of Gunnison. The locals were handicapp ed from the fact that Lester Fredrick son was out of the game, and with a weakened pitching staff it was easy for the Tigers to claw and claw deeply. Lester Williams was in the box for Gunnison and for three innings in-nings the locals made a showing. The Tigers, though soon dropped onto Williams' curves and the stuff was off. Williams allowed many two ant three base hits and even two homers were clouted out by Salina. At the end of the third innings the score stood 3 to 2 in favor of Gunnison. Gunni-son. It was here that the Gunnison pitcher broke and from then on to the end of the ninth Gunnison only scored three more runs. Lewis, pitching for Salina, demonstrated demon-strated that he was master of the art. He heldthe boys down fairly well until the seventh when he went 'tired' Orlando Crane was placed as substitute substi-tute for Williams and, like the olden time, played swift ball. The Gunnison boys are at Ephriam today where they are staging a play with Moroni at the Annual Black-hawk Black-hawk encampment. |
