Show LOWER TAXES Now that federal taxes have been brought down to a point where they no longer seriously interfere with our industrial expansion expan-sion and national prosperity, it is encouraging to note that the newspapers and the public in general are paying more attention to the burden of state and local taxes. It is coming to be more generally realized that, after all, the tax burden which falls heaviest on the farmer, the small business man and property holder, is the tax which the ordinary citizen in some form or other votes upon himself. State platforms adopted by political parties this year are paying pay-ing more attention to the question of the reduction of local taxes. Organizations which have for their purpose looking after the interest in-terest of the local taxpayer are increasing everywhere, and the people peo-ple are coming to realize more and more that if they want to have fewer tax burdens they will have to bring about the reduction themselves through their local officers . There is no reason why each county, city and state cannot in a small way emulate the splendid record of the federal government, govern-ment, both in efficiency and the wise expenditure of public money. This can be done without interfering with the progress of our school system and other institutions of public necessity. In fact it ought to be easier to administer a small unit of government more efficiently effi-ciently than the federal government because the problems are comparatively com-paratively few and simple. Taxes and great public debts have wrecked as many if not more governments than all the wars "of history. Our federal government gov-ernment has shown the way. Now let us see that our local governments govern-ments follow suit. |
