Such a house Is not necessarily large and expensive, In fact It Is most often a small house or bungalow, and its charm is derived from perfection of line, a design which catches the atmosphere at-mosphere of homelike simplicity and an adaptation to setting "which makes It fit into its surroundings as -if It had sprung from the ground along with the trees, shrubbery and flowers about it. Such a house Is shown here. Tt Is n small frame building, but amply large to make a comfortable home for the average family of today. With the front projection of porch and bedroom, bed-room, the plan Is nearly square. The broad sweep of the shingled roof Is neatly broken. Shingles, laid with wide exposure, are carefully selected for the side walls which are carried down to the grade level. A brick porch and steps, shuttered windows, window box and well-placed plantings add the finishing touch: The entrance, nt one end of the front, opens directly Into the corner of the living room. This room Is spacious, spa-cious, 22 feet long and 13 feet wide. The large fireplace, Instead of being placed In the conventional manner man-ner at the center of one side, Is set over considerably and bookcases are built In at each side of It. Directly opposite the fireplace Is the wide group of windows under which the flower box is placed. There are two other doors opening from this living room. One of these, at one end near the fireplace, opens into a hallway which gives access to two bedrooms, front and rear, with the bathroom and basement stairs between. be-tween. Both bedrooms are of good size with ample closet space. The front one would probably be Improved by one or two more windows at the side to provide cross ventilation. From the hall there is also a door into the kitchen which Is at the center rear. The other door from the living room leads into the dining room, well lighted by windows at two sides and provided with a built-in buffet. The kitchen opens directly off of the dining room and Is a typical' modern kitchen of moderate size and arranged for convenience. con-venience. Though not shown In the plan, It can 'easily be supplied with built-in cupboards and other conveniences conven-iences which are designed to aid the housekeeper. '.There Is a good pantry at one corner where the refrigerator can be . placed and arrangement Is made for supplying-It with Ice direct from the rear porch. The one possible fault In this plan Is fhe lack of separation of the dining room and kitchen', but this ls: more than compensated for by the extremely extreme-ly compact and convenient arrangement arrange-ment of the rooms which makes for comfort and reduces the housework to a minimum. |
