Ka!ph rvi'ulma, without question the most popular idol that ever drew a pair of raoiiiR goxg'es. has entered two oars in the fourteenth Annual International In-ternational Sweepstakes May 31 at the Indianapolis motor speedway. Starting Start-ing his racing career In 1907, DePalma has lived through a series of accidents in his 10 years of racing that would have stopped a less courageous driver. But broken boues have meant nothing to the little Italian-American. Of the thirteen international sweepstakes sweep-stakes run at the greatest race course in the world, Ralph has taken part In ten. He started out in the. 1911 race by finishing fourth. In 1012 came the greatest point in his career when, after af-ter putting Ins car to the front and leading the second man by 20 miles, he saw victory slip through his lingers on the last lap of the race. IVPalma's motor died at the head of the front stretch on bis last lap and be pushed his car to the tape, only to be totally disqualified because it had not crossed under its own power. In 1915 Ralph showed the field top- way home. He finished sixth in 1919; and fifth in 1920. He came up to fourth place in 1922. The year 1923 he drove his car GO laps. In 1925 he finished In seventh sev-enth place. While DePalma has entered two cars, he has not named them. He is working on them In his Los Angeles workshop. DePalma will no doubt be one of the early birds at the track for Ralph DePalma. practice, for it is well known that he has withdrawn from board-track racing rac-ing in favor of the dirt speed paths and the Indianapolis motor speedway, which DePalma says takes more skill than driving any other track in the world. There will be much interest to see just what DePalma is able to accomplish ac-complish in this first year of the vest-pocket vest-pocket motors. The piston displacement displace-ment limit is 91 cubic inches, which is just the size of some motorcycle engines. en-gines. T. E. Myers, secretary-manager of the motor speedway, says that it is his opinion that the entry list this year will easily top 30. |
