Show Youthful Forger Admits His Guilt Trying to stage a second seige of passing worthless checks and forging the names of citizes of the Valley on checks for amounts ranging from $6 to $10, cost Clift Romney his freedom. The youthful forger was ! nabbed by Sheriff Sanderson and Deputy Carlson last Saturday. The lad, about 17 years of age and who states that he is the son of Daniel Romney of Murray, confessed that he had been on the wrong track and admitted ad-mitted his wrong, according to the officers. Following complaints entered by A. H. Jensen and A. II. Peterson that theiT names had been forged to! checks, the officers went on a quiet! search and after sevearl days located I their victim. He was found at Oen-terfield Oen-terfield and placed under arrest, later! being taken to Manti where he was incarcerated in the county jail. More than a year ago many of the citizens of Centerfield and Gunnison were made victims of check forgery but no clue was ever found that would lead to the arrest of the perpetrator. Following the arrest of Romney last week he was confronted with a charge by the officers and the boy admitted that he was the fellow that passed the checks. Romney, who claims his age is 17, was given a hearing before the juvenile ju-venile judge Tuesday and after confessing con-fessing to the crimes charged against him, he was sent to the state industrial indus-trial school at Ogden, being taken to that institution yesterday morning. Another lad, a resident of Center-field, Center-field, whose name is withheld at this J time, came near following in the f oot-j oot-j steps of Romney. The Centerfield boy, at the solicitation of Romney cashed one of the checks. The unsuspecting un-suspecting lad was taken to Manti and after being cross examined, it I was found that insufficient evidence was at hand to convict him, and accordingly ac-cordingly he was given his' liberty. Not however, until Judge Nielsen had given him a good lecture and cautioned him to use care in selecting his companions. |
