Show RAILROAD REDUCES ACCIDENTS During the past year the railroads of the United states transported 931, 000,000 persons, or nearly nine times the population of our country. Number of people injured was 15 pe cent less than the average for the previous four years and there was only one fatality for every 6,314,000 persons transported. Fatalities a-mong a-mong employes also decreased mater ially, due to efforts of the railroads, in installing safety devices and in preaching the doctrine of "safety first" As a result of the 1924 campaign to eliminate grade crossing accidents a falling off of 15 per cent is shown compared with the yearly average for the four years from 1920 to 1923. At the same time there was an increase in-crease of 51 per cent in the numebr of motor vehicle registrations. A person is in less danger today, says R. H. Aishton, president of the American Railway Association, in speeding across the country at 60 miles an hour than he is in crossing a street in any of our principal cities. |
